Your very first driving lesson

Starting to drive can feel like a huge step, especially if no one in your family drives or if you have waited years to begin. We designed our beginner programme around that feeling. Your first lesson is deliberately gentle: we pick you up from home, park up on a quiet residential road in an area like Bassett, Chandlers Ford or Rownhams, and go through the cockpit drill together — seat, steering wheel, mirrors, seatbelt, controls. Nothing else happens until you feel ready.

Then, at your pace, we move off and stop, learn the biting point, and steer down a straight road. That is a full first lesson for most beginners — and it should be. We would rather you finish lesson one feeling calm and capable than overwhelmed and doubtful. Learners consistently tell us it was easier than they feared.

How our beginner course is structured

We follow a proven, personalised syllabus based on the DVSA National Standard for driving. It starts with car control and low-speed manoeuvring, then adds junctions, roundabouts and traffic systems as your judgement grows. By the middle of the course you will drive dual carriageways, complex city routes through Southampton, and handle busy roundabouts like Redbridge and Thomas Lewis Way with confidence.

Every lesson ends with a two-minute recap: what went well, what to work on, and what is next. You always know where you are and what you are working towards. Progress is tracked on a driver record card that mirrors the examiner's own marking sheet, so there are no surprises when test day comes.

Why beginners choose Sensei

Anxious first-timers are our speciality. We have taught university students moving to Southampton, parents returning after twenty years and complete beginners in their fifties. Common feedback: the calm tone of the lessons, the clear explanations without jargon, and the feeling of steady, week-by-week progress. Every instructor is DVSA approved, DBS checked and fully insured, and every car is dual-controlled and modern — so you are safe from the moment you release the handbrake.

Frequently asked questions

I have never driven before — where do we start?

Your first lesson begins on a quiet residential road with cockpit drill, controls familiarisation and moving off and stopping. Absolutely no expectation to know anything beforehand.

Do I need a provisional licence to start?

Yes, you must hold a UK provisional licence and be able to read a number plate from 20 metres. You can apply online at gov.uk before your first lesson.

How long will it take a beginner to pass?

The DVSA average is around 45 hours of professional tuition plus 22 hours of private practice. Most beginners at Sensei reach test standard in 30–45 hours.

Will I be shouted at if I make a mistake?

Never. Our whole approach is calm, patient tuition. Mistakes are how you learn — every lesson is a safe space to try, get feedback and improve.

Are two-hour lessons better than one hour for a beginner?

Yes. Two-hour lessons give beginners time to warm up, tackle new skills without pressure, and consolidate them — you progress noticeably faster.
