The two parts
The car theory test has a multiple-choice section and a hazard perception section. You must pass both parts in the same appointment to pass the test.
Always check the current test format, pass marks and identification requirements on GOV.UK before booking, as official details can change.
- Multiple-choice questions
- Hazard perception clips
- Both parts passed together
- Official booking through GOV.UK
Multiple-choice preparation
Study the Highway Code, traffic signs and official DVSA learning materials. Aim to understand why a rule exists and how it applies, rather than remembering an isolated answer.
Regular short revision sessions are usually easier to retain than a last-minute study session. Review incorrect answers and connect the topic to situations you meet during lessons.
Hazard perception
A developing hazard is something that may cause you to change speed, direction or stop. In each clip, identify when a potential hazard begins to develop and respond promptly.
Do not click continuously or in a pattern. Practise observing the full scene: look well ahead, notice side roads and crossings, and consider what other road users might do next.
Use your driving lessons
Theory and practical learning work best together. Road signs, following distances, priorities and hazard awareness become easier to understand when you discuss real examples with your instructor.
After a lesson, note any rule or situation you did not fully understand and include it in your next revision session.
On the day
Confirm the time and location, arrive early and take the correct identification. If you have accessibility needs, review the support available before booking.
Read every question carefully and use the time available. When you finish, your result will show whether you passed each section and where further study may be useful.
