Why motorway lessons matter
The motorway is where UK drivers feel least prepared. Many pass their test having never driven above 40 mph, then face the M27 in rush hour a week later. Since June 2018, DVSA approved instructors have been permitted to take learners onto motorways in dual-controlled cars — a change designed to fix exactly this gap. At Sensei we make motorway experience part of every serious learner programme, not an afterthought.
For full licence holders, motorway lessons are one of the most transformative bookings we take. Drivers who have avoided motorways for years, or who dread the school run drive to Winchester, complete a short block and never look back. The difference between fear and confidence on a motorway is training — not personality.
What we cover on your motorway session
We begin on a quiet dual carriageway to warm up speed judgement and lane discipline, then join the M27 at a familiar slip road such as Junction 3 or 5. Over the session we cover safe merging, mirrors and blind-spot checks, overtaking and returning to the left lane, dealing with slower HGVs, smart motorway red X signs, hard shoulder use, and what to do in a breakdown.
Advanced sessions add poor-weather driving, night driving on the motorway, longer routes towards Portsmouth or Winchester, and lane discipline through complex junctions like the M27 / M3 interchange. Every session ends with a debrief and clear notes on what to practise before your next drive.
Motorway confidence for nervous drivers
Many of our motorway bookings come from experienced drivers who never conquered motorway fear. Some passed decades ago; some had a scare. Our approach is gradual exposure — starting on a quiet stretch of the M27 westbound, one junction at a time, until the body relaxes. Two to three sessions is usually all it takes to swap dread for confidence. You keep control throughout, and dual controls mean the instructor can always step in if needed.

Do I need a full licence for motorway lessons?
Motorway lessons for learners are permitted from 2018 onwards with a DVSA approved instructor in a dual-controlled car. Full licence holders can take motorway confidence lessons at any time.
Which motorways will we use?
Primarily the M27 in both directions, with progression onto the M3 and short sections of the A34 depending on your confidence and goals.

How many motorway lessons will I need?

Yes — a large share of our motorway bookings are for full licence holders with motorway anxiety. We start gentle and build up.
